Syrian oregano is not just a spice: add it to your tea and you will discover a new, surprising flavor, along with health benefits.
Syrian oregano is native to Israel, and although most of us know it from the famous za’atar blend, its medicinal uses have been forgotten.
Traditionally, Syrian oregano leaves were added to steaming tea for everyday use.
And just like in tradition, today too we highly recommend adding it to infusions.
It strengthens the lungs and the immune system and has antibacterial and antiviral properties. If you have caught a cold, it will help clear your runny nose.
It also improves the digestion and absorption of food, and eases pain, bloating and gas after meals.
It kills intestinal worms.
For external use, an infused oil of Syrian oregano leaves is commonly used.
This oil has anti-inflammatory abilities: it helps with ear infections and eases breathing problems and coughs when rubbed on the chest and back.
This oil also has antifungal properties and treats skin fungus.

And a few words about the za’atar blend.
The original blend was made of several plants, including Syrian oregano, conehead thyme, pink savory, sesame and sumac (the fruit skin of the tanner’s sumac).
The combination of plants in this blend is brilliant, because it is like a kit for protecting and strengthening the body in every season of the year.
Today, most za’atar blends contain a very low percentage of herbs. They consist mainly of salt, citric acid, oil, coloring and flavoring agents and other additives, so their health value is very low, if any….
That is why it is worth buying blends that contain only herbs, without salt or other additives.

It is important to know that today Syrian oregano is a protected plant, due to overharvesting, and it is forbidden to pick it in the wild.

Our Syrian oregano is grown organically on our farm. It is hand-picked with great care and dried in full shade so its medicinal qualities are preserved.
